Upakarma

Upakarma:

1. Shashtishali Pindaswedana:
– It is type of fomentation therapy for local area or whole body also as prescribed by Vaidya.
– Rice cooked in milk and medicinal decoction used for Swedana (fomentation therapy)
– Commonly used in osteoarthritis, gouty arthritis, sciatica etc.

2. Patrapinda Swedana:
– It is also fomentation therapy for local area.
– Cooked medicinal leaves with some herbs used for Swedana.
– Commonly used in rheumatoid arthritis and some joint diseases caused due to Saam Vata Dosha.
– The Benefits of Patra Pinda Sweda include its ability to reduce muscular pain, joints stiffness, swelling, sprains and cramps, spondylitis, and chronic back pain.

3. Janu Basti:
– It is type of Snehana Karma (Olation therapy).
– The word Janu refers to knee and Basti refers to retaining something inside mainly medicated oil. In Janu Basti medicated oil is retained in the structure of black gram flour formed around Knee.
– Benefits of Janu Basti – Improves the movement of knee joint, increases weight bearing capacity, reduces swelling, reduces stiffness
– Useful in osteoarthritis, ligament tear, subluxation of joint etc.

4. Kati Basti:
– It is a type of Snehana Karma (Olation therapy).
– The word Kati refers to lumbosacral region and Basti refers to retaining something inside mainly medicated oil. In Kati Basti medicated oil is retained in the structure of black gram flour formed around Kati.
– Benefits of Kati Basti: increases weight bearing capacity, reduces stiffness, reduces pain, lumbar spondylosis etc.

5. Manya Basti:
– It is a type of Snehana Karma (olation therapy).
– The word Manya refers to cervical region and Basti refers to retaining something inside mainly medicated oil. In Manya Basti medicated oil is retained in the structure of black gram flour formed around Manya.
– Benefits of Manya Basti: increases weight bearing capacity, reduces stiffness, reduces pain, cervical spondylosis.

6. Shirodhara:
– Shirodhara is a procedure where medicated oil is continuously poured on your forehead for prescribed period.
– Shirodhara is indicated in stress, hypertension, overthinking, ADHD other psychological disorders etc.

7. Agnikarma:
– Agnikarma is an acute pain management system in Ayurveda.
– It is also used as surgical procedure in treatment of piles.
– Different types of materials are used for Agnikarma like wax, Loha Shalaka, Suvarna Shalaka, Tamra Shalaka, Panchadhatu Shalaka, Ghee, Pimpali etc.

8. Lepa, Bandha, Pichu:
– Lepa is Bahiparimarjana chikitsa which means application of different herbs in the form of paste on the different parts of body surface or on the skin as prescribed by Vaidya.
– Lepa can be done on Face, on joints, on any skin lesion for different purpose.
– Bandha means to tie a different type of bandage around desired body part for pain relief or for immobilization or as part of treatment of Vata Dosha.
– It is a treatment of Bhagna(fractures), ligament injury, subluxation of joint, prolapse of anus or uterus etc.
– Pichu is local treatment. Gause pad of cotton is soaked into different oils, medicated milk (Sidha ksheer), Kwatha and placed on a desired body part, and hold it for some time.
– There are different types of Pichu like Shiro Pichu, Hrudpichu, Janupichu, Yoni Pichu, Guda Pichu, Udar Pichu etc.

9. Uttarbasti:
– Uttar Basti is a procedure in which Basti is administer through Urethra or through vaginal canal into the uterus.
– useful in diseases related to urinary track, in infertility, In uterine fibroid, tubal block etc.

10. Talam:
– Shirasthana is a controlling center of every Indriya. It must be protected by applying oil on it.
– Talam is a procedure for Shiratarpana (nourishment of Shira).
– Oil is held on head in the paste of herbs for prescribed period.

11. Dhoompana:
– Dhoomvarti is a stick of paste of combinations of herbs.
– Ghee should be apply to the end of it and after igniting it smoke of herbs comes out.
– Administration of smoke of herbs through nostrils and through mouth for three Awartanas is called Dhoompaan.

12. Udwartanam:
– Dry powder massage on body is called Udwartana.
– Some herbs mixed with milk or oil or Gomutra are used to massage on body parts.
– Benefits of Udwartana: It helps to liquify the fat layer beneath the skin layer, it also helps to maintain the health of Skin (Twakprasadana).
